Are you using Facebook Events?

Facebook Events are a FABULOUS tool for direct sellers.  And some recent upgrades that Facebook has made to them make them even better.  Here’s what I love about Facebook Events:

  • A Daily Reminder: Facebook Events now show up in the top-right corner of the Facebook News Feed, so they’re one one of the first things people see when they log into Facebook.  When someone accepts an invitation to an event, it now appears as a daily reminder leading up to the event.  You know those people that forget to come to parties, and how hard it can be to get your hostess to do reminder calls?  Facebook Events really helps with that.
  • Export and Share: Another great feature of Facebook Events is the ability to both export the event to an external calendar, such as Outlook or Google Calendar.  This is another great way to make sure you guests get the reminders they need, and not accidentally schedule something else at the same time because they never put it on their calendar.  And when an event is set to Public, all guests can use a Share button to invite other friends to the event via Facebook.  When the event is private (such as when a hostess’ address is included on the invitation) the Share button does not appear.
  • Message Guests: Facebook allows the event organizer to send messages directly to the inbox of those that have or have not responded to your invite.  And since people often respond better to messages sent through Facebook instead of email, it’s a great way to get those reminders out.
  • Link to Your Personal Website: The great thing about an electronic invitation like Facebook Events is that you can also include a direct link to your Personal Website for those folks that can’t make it.  People who are interested can shop right away!

I often advise direct sellers to create an instruction sheet for hostesses that shows them exactly what to fill in on the fields used to set up the Event in Facebook.  It’s just one screen, and it’s very easy.  In fact, Facebook has recently simplified the process.

You do, however, need to think through sharing personal information on Events.  Will you set the event to private and include all contact information on the invitation?  Or just include an email that people can contact for that information?  When the event is public, as I said, guests can use the Share button to invite their friends.  You and your hostess need to decide how you want to approach that.

So think about setting up a Facebook Event for your next party, vendor event, fundraiser, etc.  It can really bring a lot of benefits to your business!

What do you think? Are you using Facebook Events for your business?  How?  Has it helped? Would love to read your experiences in the comments below!

Message Guests is missing from my Event Page. Any thoughts on why? It is set up as an Event for a business page – not my personal Facebook page.

I’ve set up 2 Facebook events, both of which are public so anyone should be able to invite others to this event. But apparently this is not the case. For 1 of the events, apparently only I can see the link (under the event logo) to invite others. Others can only see the Share button. How can I enable others to invite their friends along?

You must make the event Public in order for others to see it.

Thanks, but the page says that the event IS public. Perhaps FB has some technical problem? However, if it was actually closed/private, how would I go about changing it to public?

Just read that FB is currently having trouble with the Share button. If your event is public already, then the problem is on Facebook’s side.

Thank you for suggesting we set up our events on our FB account. Is there a way to email the same people each time? I couldn’t find an option to choose my customers and then to remember them or to select all. If I’ve missed that function, please let me know so I can make it easier to use each time. Thanks so much, Carol

The best way to do that would be to set up a group, and then Facebook gives you the option to set up an event through that group. Then all group members are invited.

Great info, thanks! I am really trying to maximize FB and this really helps. The other potential benefit I see for this is that the party is already loaded on FB and you don’t have to try and get people to talk about the party after the fact. I really like this, thanks.
