I skim fan page postings in my News feed--the ones that have me visiting are when they ask me to share my ideas (like this blog entry :) . And if there is a prize for the best idea, that works even better! If there is a product I can hardly wait for, I'll watch sneak peek videos. (That really relies on a bit of extreme fan loyalty, though, I think. Think "Twilight.")

I want a reason to go back to those Pages...so putting something intriguing (and of something that "adds value" to my life) will make me look. It totally depends on the kind of page it is too...something like Mashable has all kinds of different topics and I find I read quite a lot of them since they are right in my newsfeed...and some, like someone already said, I become a fan of to support the person (or group or whatever) and I rarely look at again.

Thanks for asking this question...it is helpful!

I haven't set up my fan page yet but still have an active and growing Facebook group and I interact there almost daily. I've been hesitant to go to the Fan page because I liked the more personal feeling of interacting as "myself" on my group page. With fan pages, I thought I'd have to interact as the administrator of the page.

Then today I read a post by Mari Smith about posting on your own fan page as yourself (i.e., with your facebook profile instead of as the official fan page administrator). She recommends that you appoint someone else (whom you trust) as administrator so you're free to post because Facebook won't let you post from a personal profile if you're also the administrator due to privacy issues. I'll take this advice when I do set up my page.

I'd love it if you would write a post about when you feel it's time to create a fan page, Jen, especially since I have a large Facebook group page. I'm just not sure when or why I need a fan page, other than when I approach the friend limit with Facebook. I'm not even close to that yet. A post about that would be super useful for me.

I am with Michaela..... fear the hide button if all a page posts are links to their own website and 'offers'..... and that doesn't just go for direct sales pages.... traditional businesses too.

I visit pages who post interesting comments in their updates.... share valuable information... and ask intriguing questions. I also get lots of interaction on my pages ... and lots of messages and requests regarding products, bookings and the business, because I actually don't promote any of those things... in fact, i rarely mention my company name.

I focus on creating pages that deliver and environment people want to be a part of.... projecting lots of excitement, energy, enthusiasm.... so people cannot help but ask more about what we do.

Great post as usual Jen..... like the way you get people thinking!

To be honest if a fan page comes up in my news feed I do skim it. But I have no idea how to get to a fan page otherwise. I go back to several groups I have joined often and it is usually for the content they have posted.

My personal behavior as a fan - agree with Paul. Too much of an effort . . . out of sight, out of mind, out of time. As a marketer I make the time - to see what others are doing to engage customers. I also read comments - great way to collect consumer insights.

I don't necessarily go to the page itself regularly, but I enjoy reading the updates, visiting the links, or watching the videos that fan pages post that show up in my news feed. The ones I like the best are the ones that share useful information, a quick tip, another website related to their topic or a how-to video. I do agree about posting once a day, it's made a big difference for my own fan pages.
