Facebook Page and Profile – What Should I Post Where?

I was a hold-out on the Facebook Page for a long time. I didn’t like the idea of splitting my personal and professional self down the middle, and I greatly enjoyed the two-way communication that being Facebook friends allowed. I created an opt-in area for folks in the form of a Facebook Group, and this was the place that I shared business-specific messages and offers. But I was still friends with everyone on my Profile.

And then Facebook changed Groups. No longer did people have the ability to opt-in. Rather, they were added to Groups whenever someone else decided they should be added, and had to opt-out instead. I no longer felt this was a good solution for direct sellers. Pages were now a better option.

Since I was going to be recommending Facebook Pages now, I felt I had to get familiar with them myself. Therefore, I set up my own Facebook Page, and began learning best practices. I also stayed friends with folks through my Facebook Profile.

And thus the challenge with split personality began. Since I was connected with business contacts in two places, what should I share through my Profile and what through the Page? I didn’t want to duplicate content. But at the same time, I have personal friends who I KNOW are consuming my business content, simply because I post through my Profile. Every now and then someone I wouldn’t have expected mentions to me that they use my content. I didn’t want to lose that.

So where was the line? In the beginning it was challenging, but it’s gotten easier. Β In today’s post, I want to share with you what I’ve learned.

  • Share your blog in both places. When blog posts are full of valuable content, they can be enjoyed on your Profile as well as your Page. I do try to space out the postings, however, so they don’t show up on my Profile and Page at the same time (and therefore annoy people connected to both.)
  • Keep your Page mostly business. Even though I love to share recipes and funny stories about my kids, I save that for my Profile. I figure that if people have only joined my Page, they have done so for the information I share. So I try to provide consistent value for that audience. However I try to do so with a sense of my personality. I try to keep it fun. It’s about finding that balance, so that people enjoy coming to your Page.
  • Make your Page the place for questions. If people come to you with specific questions related to your business on your Profile, encourage them to post those questions to your Page. What this does is keep all the answers in one place, for everyone to see. It also makes your Page a valuable resource that people come to rely on, and visit.
  • Use your Profile for more subtle posts about your business. You won’t be posting your latest special on your Profile. But you can use your Profile to talk about things you’ve done in your business. Talk about how much you enjoy the people on your team. How much fun a party was last night. How excited you are to be going to national conference. How excited your husband was when he learned you had earned the incentive trip. This sort of thing peaks people’s interest. You can also share more generic informational content that your friends may appreciate and use.
  • Don’t duplicate your posts. It is very likely that you will have a lot of people who are connected to you on your Page and Profile. Don’t annoy them with the same post twice. That just clutters up the News Feed. Instead, take the time to craft messages for a business-only audience, and one that is likely to include your personal friends. Sometimes you may need to get the same message to both groups. But customize it. And just like with your blog, consider posting the messages at different times.

    I too am confused as to what is the Profile area verses the Page, and then someone says to update Status from time to time, I am not sure where or what that is.

    Hey Jennifer! Great post on the big page / profile dilemma!

    It’s tough to split and personally I find it strange at times as my page is under my brand name, so can seem a little odd in comments.

    Nevertheless, can see that this is the way to go for business and protecting your account with FB.

    What seems like a cool strategy which I haven’t tried yet is to use your page for updates, then tag yourself so that one update appears in both places.

    Might be a cool way to control the newsfeed as you mention above?

    I’m still rather new to Facebook and don’t understand all the nuances and differences that you talked about, i.e. Profile and Page. Thanks for the information. I will have to explore Facebook a bit more.

Excellent confirmation that I’ve been handling the “split” phenomenon properly, although I don’t think I’ve been giving enough time between posting new blog posts on both my Fan Page and my Personal Profile. Will make a point of spacing those out better in the future thanks to your article. πŸ™‚

    I LOVE your practical, down to earth suggestions!! It is obvious with so many other social media bloggers that they are disguising their “help” as an advertisement. Like so many direct sellers, I don’t have the budget to enlist this kind of folks. But I am technically challenged, so I need simple, down to earth, steps to implement good suggestions.

    Aloha Jennifer, great post and a lot of common sense to consider on a two frame single social site. I just recently got a fb page and really didn’t know why or what the purpose was for, if you are able to do the same on my profile page. But now I see why they branched it off and made it more exclusive for business and personal. But a bit challenging for messages and traffic. But I find myself doing custom messages for the same content. Glad I came be and thanks for sharing! Mahalo, Lani πŸ™‚
