Facebook’s Bias Against 3rd Party Apps

For the last several days we’ve been without power (and heat, and light…) in NJ (which was finally restored last night. Hurray!) Since we manage the social media presences for several clients (some of whom were also without power, thanks to the storm) we had to get creative with regards to posting and responding. Some of it was done through our local Starbucks and free wifi. (Yay, Starbucks!) Some was done through our smartphones.

But since we knew we wouldn’t be able to take up Starbucks’ plugs and seats for the price of a cup of joe 24 hours per day (our neighbors needed them too), we also pre-scheduled some posts using HootSuite. We wrote the posts, and then scheduled them for the times we wanted them to appear on Twitter and Facebook.

And that’s when I learned that with the new Facebook, their bias against third party apps that aren’t partners has gotten even worse. Sure, I can see every song that friends are playing via Spotify in the News Feed (Spotify is a Facebook partner). But practically NO ONE saw our posts on Facebook. Content that would normally have solicited response had we posted it directly in Facebook didn’t garner a single like or comment. And it’s exactly the same type of content that ALWAYS gets response.

The conclusion is that you simply can’t use HootSuite to post to your Facebook Page. Not if you want it to have any impact at all.

Have you found any 3rd party apps for posting that actually get seen in Facebook? Would love to read about them in the comments below.

I’d been rather suspicious of this. Thanks for confirming it. Oh but I do wish for the ease of scheduling HootSuite provides! At least we can still schedule Tweets without having them hidden.

I think they want you to use Post Planner which is not free for pages… šŸ™

What a pain!! :/ And how are we supposed to know which are pre-approved for FB favoritism? Do they supply a list with which are best to get the most visibility? Because I thought visibility depended on OUR preferences mixed with general popular. SIGH. I keep getting sent G+’s way when things like this happen. Anyhoo, my fiance is a big fan ping.fm for posting, just not sure if you can schedule or if they’ve stayed current.

I’ve used HootSuite for quite some time and apparently not experiencing these issues!? Looks like some of my posts from HootSuite may be erratic since Sunday or Monday?? Reports on my Page say I’ve had from about 7 to 15 to as many as 38 impressions? With zero feedback…not unusual, I think! I’m posting to my FB profile, FB page, LinkedIn, and Twitter from HootSuite!

Does anyone have feedback on using Hearsay Social for FB posts? I’m trying to find out if they are FB “partners” of if using them has a negavive impact on my posts being seen.

I just discovered HootSuite and started using it for our church that I maintain the Facebook Page for – made it very easy to schedule posts to go out since I generally think about things to post while in the office and I’m only there 3 days a week. I have seen the posts come up.
Tried Tweetdeck before but you have to keep it up and running on your computer and my computer at the church likes to disconnect on it’s own therefore kicking anything running off. So with that technical issue, Tweetdeck just wasn’t a good match for me.

I haven’t tried HootSuite for my Thirty-One Group – but I can update that from my phone if I’m out and think of something. (I will think of something for that while out more frequently than the menu for the church Wednesday supper)

I appreciate all the information you share on getting posts seen.
And glad to hear your power is back.
