Lots of Scams on Facebook Lately – Be Careful!

Have you seen this one lately?

What about this one?

Or even this one?

What do they all have in common? They’re all scams floating around Facebook.

This past week there have been a boatload of account hacks. After the spammers get into your account, they proceed to plaster your friends’ walls, inbox, etc with messages like these. Clicking on them compromises your friend’s account too.

So what should you do?

  1. If you find that you’ve been hacked, CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD IMMEDIATELY. More advise and tips from Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/help/?page=1027
  2. If you see one of these messages, DO NOT CLICK ON IT. Instead, tell your friend about it so that they can change their password.
  3. If these messages land on your wall, DELETE THEM IMMEDIATELY. This means you need to be checking your Facebook profile daily, at least for the time being.

It’s up to all of us to be vigilant in order to prevent the spread of these attacks. Remember, if you think it’s odd for your friend to post something, you’re probably right. Check before you click.

Have you experienced any of these scams? How do you stay safe? Would love to read your thoughts in the comments.

I have been very pleased that my personal AND my business FB have been basically free of the bin Laden stuff but this particular (incorrect photo anyway) one came through and I hit the X button immediately – mainly because I didn’t want it sullying my FB. Now I am glad that I did. Thank you for the update.

It’s also easy to spot because that friend will have posted the exact same message to multiple friends walls. This shows up in the news feed all grouped together. I got one of these yesterday and quickly deleted it.

Thanks for the Facebook link too!

    Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for doing this! I get these all the time and delete them! They appear to be from friends but I don’t trust these items because my friends would not send these! As for the questions and games I delete and block all of them. I got the Osama one and deleted it immediately plus saw some of these on others walls! Thanks again!
    J.
